There’s a lot to be said for making the perfect cuppa. Don’t believe us? Angela Pryce, senior tea buyer at multi-brand tea specialists Whittard, told Metro.co.uk exactly what you should be doing – and warned against one big mistake many of us make.
‘Never, ever squeeze your teabag,’ she warns. ‘This can make the tea bitter due to the release of tannins,’ she adds. Instead, you should remove it gently after three to five minutes of brewing.

She also recommends that you don’t boil the same water twice. ‘Each time the kettle is boiled, the oxygen levels in the water reduce. Tea loves freshly boiled, oxygenated water, and old water will make your brew taste flat.’ But of course, the tea expert had more tips up her sleeve.
Tips for making the perfect cup of tea, every time:
- Firstly, she recommends that you always use a china teapot
- You should use around two grams (g) of tea for every 100 millilitres (ml) of water. That equates to around two teabags for a small teapot, and four for a large one
- Always pour freshly boiled water onto the tea leaves. Leave a gap of around four to six millimetres at the top
- Pop the lid on the teapot and leave the tea to brew for six minutes
- Taking your tea with milk? It should go in the cup first, yes really
- Ensure the water temperature is no higher than 85°C, so as not to scald the milk, if using. However, it’s important that it’s still above 60°C to ‘optimise flavour and sensation’
