The National Road Safety Authority (ANSR), the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP) are launching the Road Safety Campaign 'At the wheel, the mobile phone can wait' tomorrow, May 7th.

Taking place between May 7th and 13th, this campaign "aims to alert drivers to the negative and even fatal consequences of the improper use of mobile phones while driving", according to a joint statement from these forces.

The campaign will include awareness-raising actions by the ANSR in mainland Portugal and by the services of the regional administrations of the Azores and Madeira, as well as inspection operations by the GNR and the PSP, with special emphasis on roads and accesses with high traffic flow.

The awareness-raising actions will take place simultaneously with inspection operations in the following locations:

  • Day May 7th, at 09:30: IC2 - Km 33.4, Lisbon (39.049696, -8.993823);
  • Day May 8th, at 15:00: Rua Coronel Armando da Silva Maçanita, Portimão (37.147670, -8.542525);
  • Day May 9th, at 08:00: Almodôvar Service Area - North/South Direction (37.535877, -8.184205);
  • Day May 10th, at 10:00: Avenida Lino de Carvalho, Évora (38.578304, -7.902009);
  • Day May 13th, at 14:00: EN18 - Km 171.100, Portalegre (39.297784, -7.448546)

The letter also recalls that, at 50 km/h, looking at the mobile phone for three seconds is the same as driving a distance of 42 meters with your eyes closed - the equivalent of a line of 10 cars.

"Using a mobile phone while driving increases the probability of having an accident by four times, causing an increase in reaction time to unforeseen situations", the GNR and the PSP finally warn.
