In an interview with Diário de Notícias and TSF, released today, Admiral Gouveia e Melo indicated that the monitoring of Russian ships has always existed, but in a completely different quantity.

"Three years ago, the number of monitorings we did was less than a dozen per year. Last year alone we did 46 and this year we have already done 14. These ships from the Russian Federation, which can be military or merchant but with known military activity, can transit our waters in order to go from position A to position B or they may have interests in our waters. And both things happen simultaneously," he said.

According to the Chief of Staff of the Portuguese Navy, what the Navy does is to monitor, to prevent them from carrying out operations in Portuguese waters.

Admiral Gouveia e Melo also added that "unpleasant situations have already happened in these follow-ups", without specifying.

"I will not mention here the specific operational matters, but not only with us, but also with the Air Force itself, there have already been situations that normally, in the periods prior to this period of tension, would never happen and that we consider to be an escalation," he said.

In the interview, Admiral Gouveia e Melo contextualizes, stating that the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation has changed international behavior.

"This change can be so structural that it can destroy the foundations we have today. By destroying these foundations, everything we take for granted today, which is security in Europe, NATO, the European Union, which are essential pillars for our security and for our prosperity, can be put into question," he said.

The Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces also assured, in the interview, that the Navy is prepared for combat and defended a military service model that allows young people to be mobilized quickly, if necessary.
